As previously highlighted, the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has introduced its new, free Cyber Action Toolkit, created to help small businesses bolster their cyber security in a straightforward and cost-effective manner.

The toolkit is aimed at organisations without dedicated IT teams or substantial security budgets and provides clear, practical steps that can be put into practice immediately.

Helping small businesses take action

The NCSC acknowledges that many smaller firms find cyber security intimidating—often believing it to be overly technical, too expensive, or simply not urgent. The vast amount of guidance available can also feel overwhelming, leading many to postpone taking action.

The new Cyber Action Toolkit seeks to counter this by laying out simple, easy-to-follow tasks that deliver immediate protection, even for those with little or no cyber security experience. Rather than expecting users to wade through lengthy advice, the toolkit focuses on completing manageable actions one at a time.

According to the NCSC, the Toolkit has already been tested by more than 2,500 trial users, with positive outcomes.

One early tester, copywriter Siobhan Strode, noted: “Having a guide was really helpful. I felt really motivated to tick actions off – they were quick to do.”

Why it matters for your business

While many assume cyber security is primarily a concern for larger organisations, the NCSC stresses that no business is too small to be targeted. Smaller enterprises are just as likely to fall victim to online crime as their larger counterparts.
